2007 Synopsis

The 2007 version of the Eastern Comet Football Team will feature a new head coach at the top for the first time in 14 years. Josh Edwards takes over for his mentor Dave Durkes during the 2007 season. Last season the Comets struggled to an 0-10 season in a very difficult MIC conference. Eastern is the only 1A school in the MIC facing powerhouses like Heights, Western, and Lewis Cass. The Comets difficulties the last couple of seasons have stemmed from the lack of players in the upper two grades. Last seasons senior class of 5, will be followed up by another senior class of around 5-6. Those seniors that will be representing the Comets are deep in experience and bountiful in strength and determination, and are ready to change the trend of losing. The Eastern players have to remember that they are playing for a school and community of great football tradition. Eastern at one time in the 60's had win streaks of over 30 games in a row. In the 70's and 80's used to be one of the most feared teams in their conference winning their conference title numerous times. The comets under Coach Durkes have still posted 5 or more wins in 7 of the last 13 seasons. The future is bright! Although the senior class will be sparse, the junior class will offer 16 players, all of who have valuable starting experience in the MIC. The upcoming Sophs will supply 15-18 players, again who have notable playing time in a very tough MIC. The incoming Freshman class is loaded with talent, numbers, and size which will be much needed in coming years. This years Freshman class could bring in as many as 18 Freshman which will put the Comets over 50 players for the first time in a long time. This upcoming season will still have some growing pains due to the new system and small senior class, but the future is very bright with many young faces working hard in the weight room. The Comets are ready to return!
