LaPorte Slicers 2006 Sectional Champs!!

History

What is a Slicer?

At the end of World War I a city wide contest was held in LaPorte to name the football team. Until that time the team was referred to as the Orangemen. Margaret Eishout submitted the name "Slicers". Her father immigrated here from Holland, and was employed at the time at the U.S. Slicing Machine Company. That company later changed it's name to Berkel Inc. in 1970. If you go to a store with deli, chances are they are using a Berkel slicer. Margaret's name stuck, and we have been called the Slicers since that time. At first not everyone went with the new name (newspapers included), but it eventually became our official school nickname. So there it is. The Slicers are named after a local company that made food preparation equipment.
