Active Trophy Rivalries
The Battle of 119th Street
| Teams: | Hammond Clark (35 wins) vs Whiting (32 wins) & 6 ties
| Trophy: | "The "
|
| Current Holder: | ?Team?
| Inagural Game: | 1934
|
| Further information:
| As the name implies, the game is played for one stationary trophy, 119th Street. The trophy is acually traveled upon. The main drag in downtown Whiting is coveted by both schools with bragging right lasting for a year, maybe more if you can keep winning. It is the second oldest continuous rivalry in northern Indiana, and it does not have the amount of games as some rivalries because the schools are Class 1A and Class 3A so they won't meet in the playoffs. Once a year and then the waiting starts all over again.[1]

The trophy, which is from the church tower at the old Cathedral off of Meridian street, disappeared for many years before mysteriously being dropped off at the front of Cathedral's door with a poem attached to it. There was a newspaper article written about the bell in the Indy Star I believe around 2001 or 2002.[3]
The rivalry started in 1944 between cathedral and Sacred Heart. It has lived on since the merger of Sacred Heart, Kennedy, and Chartrand. It has had it's fair share of stories including a 40 year disappearance and stints where Indianpolis Roncalli and Indianapolis Cathedral have not played each other.[4]

The game used to be held every year on the afternoon of Armistice Day (now Veterans Day), November 11. Both communities have ties to coal mining. Sullivan has always been a little bigger than Linton. Supposedly many of the richer folks in the coal mining business originally lived in Sullivan. This gave it a David vs. Goliath/The Haves vs. The have-nots feel to the game.[23]

In the early 70's Elkhart High School divided into Elkhart Central and Elkhart Memorial High Schools. A rivalry ensued as expected, and to honor the winner of the cross-town contest, a local woodcarver and teacher at West Side Junior HS Jim Holland carved the Mangy Lion. I actually had Mr. Holland for a teacher at West Side in the late 70's. Mr. Holland has since died of cancer. He also carved a trophy for the basketball teams as well that is still passed to this day.[25]
